2.2 Discussion: What Is Leadership

 

Getting Started

Recognizing good organizational leader characteristics is important, not only to ensure that your leadership style is beneting the organization but also to identify these characteristics in others so they can provide the greatest service to the organization.

This assignment is a continuation of material from Chapter 1 and your 1.2 Discussion. This material will help you understand organizational leader characteristics as you consider and defend your perspectives and consider those of your peers.

Background Information

In this discussion, you will consider the various denitions of leadership as provided in the textbook from the authors’ review of literature in the eld of leadership. You will also explore the concept of leadership as both rational and emotional as well as the dierences between the roles of a manager versus the roles of a leader.

The concept of followership is also introduced in this assignment’s reading from the textbook, as well as the growing role of women in leadership positions and responsibilities.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Review Chapter 1, “What Do We Mean by Leadership?”, in our textbook. As you review, reect upon the denitions of leadership and how these denitions and other aspects of leadership add to your prior understanding of a leader’s role in an organization. 
  3. Conduct a critical analysis of the postings by two of your classmates from the posts submitted in 1.2 by the end of the workshop and should be written as if you were reviewing their posting in an academic journal. Your discussion response should, therefore, answer the following questions as applicable:
    1. Were three leadership denitions clearly defined with examples and clear, insightful critical thinking? Comment on two of the three definitions of leadership presented in the post of your classmates. Do you agree or disagree with their interpretation of the definition of leadership? Provide rationale from personal examples or subject matter expert opinions. 
    2. Did the discussion of leadership as an art or a science include a detailed explanation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking? Review your classmates’ posts. Does their explanation support defining leadership as either an art or a science? Explain. 
    3. Was the concept of spiritual gifts effectively discussed, relating the concept to that of leadership styles?   
    4. In addition to commenting on the critical thinking displayed in the post, offer your comments on the original post and provide your overall agreement or disagreement with the posters concept of leadership. Your response to each question above should be one paragraph in length and cite one academic source.   
  4. Interactions are expected to: 
    1. Clearlyand thoroughly address the prompt(s) with meaningful information that shows critical thinking. 
    2. Introduce your own ideas and questions to add greater depth to the discussion, rather than restating what your classmates have shared. (Include much more than Great post, or I agree.)

Getting Started

In this assignment, you will write an essay on the concepts of power and inuence, contrasting what you learned in Chapter 4 of our textbook with principles of servant leadership from the supplemental resources noted below. This assignment should cause you to reflect on how the proper use of power and influence can enhance the leaders ability to effectively lead.

Background Information

It has been said that leadership, simply stated, is inuence, the ability to use a position of leadership to inuence behavior and positive change within an organization. Many leaders, of course, have dierent perceptions of how to inuence others, utilizing power in negative ways rather than positive ways. The concept of servant leadership emphasizes the positive ways in which a leader can inuence followers and initiate positive change within an organization.

  6. Reflect upon the concepts of a leaders power and inuence, in particular how the ideas from servant leadership enhance this aspect of a leaders abilities and success.
  7. Write a paper incorporating information from our textbook and the supplemental material on servant leadership:
    1. Compare and contrast the concepts of power and inuence as discussed in the textbook with what you discover about servant leadership from the supplemental readings above. Provide a detailed explanation for your evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
    2. Give an example from your personal experience where you did not agree with the exercise of power and inuence. Would the application of servant leadership principles have aected the outcome? Getting Started

In this assignment, you will discuss the principles of ethics and values described in Chapter 5 of our textbook, applying those principles to your workplace and experience.

Leaders are continually required to make decisions that fall into areas where there is no one right answer.

Knowing how to analyze these situations from a moral and ethical framework will assist the leader in more effectively leading and, in some cases, keep the leader from having to defend against charges of ethics violations.

As Proverbs 22:1 says, A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold (New International Version).

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Analyze ethical and moral implications of a leadership situation.

Background Information

According to our textbook, Leaders face dilemmas that require choices between competing sets of values and priorities, and the best leaders recognize and face them with a commitment to doing what is right, not just what is expedient (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2019, p. 143).

The authors provide a theoretical and practical framework for leadership values and ethics, providing the reader with helpful information on subjects such as moral and ethical reasoning, the concepts of authentic and servant leadership, leading by example, creating and sustaining an ethical climate, and principle-centered leadership.

  2. Read Chapter 5, Values, Ethics, and Character in our textbook. As you read, reect on how a leader can eectively inuence an organizations commitment to ethics, values, and moral behavior. In that chapter, the authors refer to the research of Rushworth Kidder, who identied four ethical dilemmas that are common to our personal and organizational experience, including three principles for resolving ethical dilemmas.

    2. Would a virtuous leader hire a lobbyist to delay or kill costly but morally and ethically appropriate legislation?
    3. Would a virtuous leader violate virtuous principles, even if legal, when doing business in foreign countries?
    4. How is Servant Leadership related to Virtuous Business?
  6. After completing the 2.4 Assessment and reflecting on the questions above, write a paper incorporating information from our textbook and the supplemental readings. Be sure to provide detailed explanations for your evaluations that demonstrate clear, insightful critical thinking.
    1. Describe your personal experiences with one or more of the ethical dilemmas described by Kidder and how they were resolved or should have been resolved.
    2. How can an ethical and values-driven corporate culture inuence the eective outcome of ethical dilemmas, and what is the leaders responsibility in developing that culture?
