Hello,

Public health helps protect the health of communities and individuals. They help the public by trying to preventing people from getting sick or injured. Some people in the field help track disease outbreaks. Lets take Covid 19 in to account, people who work in public health where on the front line just as much as healthcare workers trying to protect some of our more vulnerable communities. Epidemiologist worked overtime to find patterns and the best way to fight it. The goal of Public health workers is to make the quality of life better and to prevent health risks. It can take an army of people to do this. Most people think of just the main factors of Public Health such as the research side, places like the CDC and the WHO, but it goes deeper into our basic way of life than most people think. The road thats needs work or the restaurant that was linked to a salmonella outbreak, these are all the things that can tie into this work field.

Hello Instructor and Class,

The overall goal or purpose of public health is to protect the health of individuals and others in the community, where we reside, work, or frequent.  Public health is a science and its work is achieved by the promotion living a healthy type of lifestyle, doing research on different types of diseases, and preventing illnesses and injuries.  WHO, the World Health Organization , defines public health and its goals as “all organized measures (whether public or private) to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life among the population as a whole” (Achieving the Goals of Public Health, 2018).  Basically, the goal or purpose is to provide conditions in which we as a people/the entire population, can be healthy and live a long life.  Another part of that goal is to put an end to avoidable health risks and situations where disease can be eliminated or avoided (Acheson, 1988).  Some people just think of the physical when it comes to public health.  Public health also involves our mental well being as mentioned by C. E. Winslow.  Winslow defines public health as a “science and an art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting physical and mental health and well-being” (Winslow, 1920).  We most definitely have to look at public health as a whole.

The overall goal of Public Health is for communities and organizations to come together to research, educate and implement policies and procedures to keep people healthy. There are ten goals that Public Health tries to maintain. Local communities are active in Public health by treating people with illnesses. They provided education to communties so the public can be informed using all different kinds of media whether it be social media, the news, classes or clinics and hospitals. The State government helps implement policies and procedures that the federal government provides. The State government also gathers data from local counties to research the impact of certain diseases on how it affects different age groups, people from different socioeconomic classes, cultures, ethnicities, men, women children, etc. Data is very important when it comes to acquiring funding at a state level from the federal government therefore, it is very important that medical professionals, community leaders, state officials, subject matter experts and state leaders come together to keep people healthy. There are also scientists who work very hard to look at what is going on in the environment that might cause illnesses, epidemics, pandemics, etc. Thank you.

Hello,

An historical event that have influenced the field of public health is also one my favorite one, Polio vaccine. This is such a major turning point in the mid-1900s. It can be seen and documented as to why vaccinations are important for us a society. Whereas families were having to tell their children to stay inside at one point because of polio, it is not even a thought on parents minds now. It has helped prevent over 700,000 deaths and saved almost $200 billion in medical cost in the last 20 years alone.

Another one would be the decline in tobacco use. As a respiratory therapist this one is important for me. Smoking can cause lung cancer, COPD and help lead to heart failure. Even though the field has pushed for harder laws and restriction (tax increases and higher age limits to buy) with smoothing there is still a ways to go. Epidemiologist used control studies to link smoking with lung cancer. This was a huge blow for team tobacco and would eventually lead to national campaigns against smoking.
