ITALIAN RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE

Patrons Complete Identity:

At this stage, you will flesh out the identity of your patron. Please keep in mind that for people of Renaissance Italy, personal identity was a function of familial, social, and neighborhood networks, as well as economic, professional, and ecclesiastical ties. The types of patrons discussed in ART 100 include wealthy merchants and bankers, powerful cardinals and popes, as well as autocratic rulers or princes. In some cases these patrons were women, but please remember that although they exercised a certain amount of agency, the patronage opportunities available to women were circumscribed by the patriarchal society in which they lived. Each of these groups had different motivations and goals for their architectural projects and commissioned different types of structures to achieve specific ends. Please keep this in mind as you create your fictional Renaissance patron, as the identity of your patron will determine the form and function of your monument. In this paper, you must give your patron a name, a family history, a place of origin and dwelling, and a profession. Because you need to provide considerable detail, this assignment must be two to three pages in length (typed, double-spaced text in 12-point font with one-inch margins).
