1Read and Annotate “No Longer One of Them” by Vivian Gornick.  Annotate the reading following the guidelines for annotating.

On a separate document, write a response following the guidelines for responding to readings:

Guidelines for In-Class Writing Responses to Readings

1. On the upper left side of the paper include (one line per entry):  Your name, ESL100DE, Prof. Martinez Earley, Assignment # and title and author of the reading you are responding to, date.

2. Begin by introducing the reading youre responding to and the authors name.   Give the context of the reading and briefly summarize the central idea of the reading in one or two sentences.  For example:  In the reading My English Julia Alvarez retells her experience learning English and how

3. Then, you can choose to write about any of the following suggestions (you dont need to do them all in each response) .  Write at least TWO paragraphs and use at lest ONE supporting quote:

__   *  Explain what is the main idea the author is trying to communicate and whether you agree or disagree with this idea and why.

__   * Write about what you like about the reading or what interests you the most and explain why.  Provide specific examples.

_      * Write about what you dont like about the reading or what you find confusing and explain why. 

_      *  Write about a connection to your own experience or ideas.  Provide examples.

_      * Raise questions or objections about the reading or write about something you find difficult to understand in the reading and explain why.
