Step 1: Identify and develop your topic

Selecting a topic can be the most challenging part of a research assignment. Since this is the first step in writing a paper, it is vital that it done correctly.

Narrow the focus of your paper. (I will provide broad subject areas and you should try to make your specific topic as possible.)
Choose a topic that not only interest you, but will also be interesting to the reader.
You may want to choose a research question that your paper will answer.
Step 2: Conduct preliminary research

After you have decided the direction you want to take for the paper, do a preliminary search to determine whether there is enough information available for your needs and to set the context of your research. You may find it necessary to adjust the focus of your topic in light of the resources available to you.

Look up keywords on your topic
Make sure you use a wide variety of sources (Internet, books, journals, newspapers, databases, etc )
Try to put information into your own words
Keep records of your sources, such as publication information, authors names, pages
Step 3: Create a tentative thesis

After rereading your notes and reflecting on your topic, formulate a tentative one-sentence thesis. A thesis states your stance on a specific issue regarding the text. An initial thesis should be tentative. Remain willing to change your thesis throughout the writing process.

Step 4: Construct an outline or informal notes

Organize your thoughts in an outline or notes to help you, the writer, reflect on your research and vision for your paper. Your outline or informal notes will help you determine if you need additional information for the paper.

Step 5: Write a Draft

Keep in mind that you may need to write multiple rough drafts. Try to write in your own voice and remember to cite your sources as you write the draft.

Step 6: Revise, Edit, and Proofread

When revising your draft, focus on larger elements of your paper, such as content, organization, evidence. Editing requires you to focus on grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proper citations for your paper.

Step 7: Write and Submit the Final Draft

Make sure you observe all formatting guidelines and include all parts of the paper as instructed.
