Structured Interviews

Pick a line level position that you are familiar with (it could be a job you have done in the past, one you are doing now, or one that you might mange in the future). For that position, create a 6 question structured interview that is specific to the position. Create two job knowledge questions, two behavioral questions, and two situational questions that are SPECIFIC to the position. You wouldn’t ask something like “Why should we hire you” or “What is your career goal” (or any questions in figure 7-3) as those are generic questions that could be asked of any position. An example of a specific job knowledge question for a sommelier (wine salesperson) could be “Tell me the difference in flavor profile between a chardonnay and a pinot grigo.” Then explain how you would evaluate the responses you receive (how would you know which candidate answered in the most ideal manner). Finally, explain how having a structured interview for the position you identified would be generally more valid than an unstructured interview.

  1. List the position that you are discussing and the organization where this position would work. Generally explain the position’s responsibilities (this should be no more than 3 sentences)
  2. List 6 specific structured interview questions that would be specific to the position you identified. Indicate for each question if it is a job knowledge question, a behavioral question, or a situational question (remember that you need to have 2 of each). Describe how you would evaluate the responses from candidates that you might receive for each specific question,
  3. Explain how having a structured interview for this position would generally be more valid than an unstructured interview.
