Ape Characteristics, Lesser Apes, and Orangutans

Answer the following questions based on the reading from Chapter 5, the websites, and the videos. Try your best to summarize the information and write what you have learned in your own words. Any text that you directly copy needs to be in quotation marks. Copying from the textbook will not be enough to get a high grade (see the grading rubric below). For full credit, you should either explain the information in your own words or if you copy text from the book, you should also provide your own interpretation. 1.The primate group Hominoidea (= hominoids) refers to the apes. What are the two groups that apes are split into? What are the names of the apes found within each group? Describe the characteristics of the apes.

2.What is brachiation? Describe the physical adaptations to brachiation that are seen in the apes. Describe what you noticed about the gibbons in the brachiation video clips.

3.The family Hylobatidae includes several different species of gibbons and siamangs. In what geographic area are gibbons and siamangs found? Describe the characteristics of the gibbons and siamangs (physical and behavioral) using information from your textbook, the web reading, and the videos.

4.In what geographic area do orangutans (genus Pongo) live? Describe the characteristics of orangutans (physical and behavioral) using information from your textbook, the web reading, and the video clip.

5.Film Notes: Watch and take notes on the ~17-minute orangutan documentary. Type up your “film notes” as your answer to this question.

6. This week you learned about the characteristics of apes, which is a primate group that includes humans. For this post, I want you to think and write about something that you previously thought was a “human-like” trait but that you now know is a characteristic that other apes share as well. The word counts for this post is 150 words.
