This lesson will focus on dramatic and situational irony in The Boy in Striped Pajamas. 

Please answer the following questions in complete sentences using evidence from the text. 

  1.  Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something that the characters do not. What are examples of dramatic irony you find in Brunos encounter with Pavel? 
  2. Situational irony occurs when something unexpected happens in the story.  When Maria has a conversation with Bruno, she stated that Brunos father is A very good man.  He takes care of us.  Explain how this statement is ironic?  (pp 58-59) 
  3. What is ironic about Bruno thinking it is unfair that Schmuel has many friends while he has none? 
  4. What other examples of irony can you find in this section of the novel?   
  5. Why do you think the author, John Boyne, included so many instances of irony in this novel?
