PEERS RESPONSE:

One of the steps of writing I struggle with is overcoming writer’s block.  I believe I have writer’s block because my expectations are too high, I say that because, for one, I attempt to make the first draft the best I can write without focusing on what is being asked. The more pressure I put on myself, the higher my anxiety level rises and the more writing becomes as a run-on I should say. Second, I believe I could be burned out with all the writing that this field has us do. We all have our limits, our physical, mental, emotional, and all of the aforementioned. Eventually, our body, brain, or emotions are going to rebel and insist on downtime, which may come in the guise of what we call writers block. A family member of mine told me that I should keep in mind that I’m not blocked; I’m just exhausted. which I  do believe at times. Lastly, I am distracted, I say that because my life at the moment is full of distractions. Few of us have the luxury of being free from distractions. Most of us have jobs, spouses, kids, and responsibilities that occupy a huge amount of our brain space. At times I feel overwhelmed with just too much on my desk, and in my brain. When those distractions mount, its often easier and more productive to just stop writing and go take care of my life, to do whatever it is that is causing myself to feel pressured, have excessively harsh self-criticism, fear of being compared to other writers, and their work, a lake of external motivation such as praise or attention, and a lack of internal motivation such as a desire to share a story with the world. Those are the writing challenges I have faced while in this class. The possible strategies that I will employ in the future are overcoming my writer’s block fear, by being more focused and less distracted. I will keep a designated journal where I can free-write,  respond to brainstorm questions, ask for help from a friend, or work on a different section. Whenever I find time to meditate, envision myself writing. Most Importantly I will use the writing center more often for help.
