Solid Waste Management

Discuss how you dispose of solid waste. In your discussion, address the questions that follow. How often do you dispose of solid waste? Do you have curbside pickup? Do you recycle? If so, what materials do you recycle, and how often do you recycle? Is your recycling curbside or drop-off? If you do not recycle, why not? Do you use composting? Do you attempt to minimize your generation of waste? Why, or why not?

Heather:

Hello class and professor! My name is Heather, I live in west central Florida. I recently have taken the position of Life Safety Coordinator for a local hospital. Previously my only experience in EHS was 3 years as an EHS assistant for a recycling company. Some of my future goals include completing my masters (currently in my final 2 courses!), learning as much as I can in my new role and potentially become the director of plant operations for the hospital.

Part II:

Currently we dispose of solid waste in the dumpster at my husbands shop once a week. We do not currently recycle because the community recycling dumpster was removed and the only pickup service in my area does not pickup recycling. I do reuse/repurpose items when I can and we are not composting food scraps, majority of our food scraps go to the chickens. I do try to minimize waste in different ways like buying unpackaged fresh fruits and vegetables or buying things in bulk and using glass/plastic storage jars.
