Earthquakes

Earthquakes cause devastation in the Americas and the world. Mitigating the impacts of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes requires different types of measures and approaches. Within the limited scope of this forum,  please discuss mitigation measures – structural and non-structural (e.g., education, indigenous knowledge, zoning, etc.) – to reduce the impacts of earthquakes. Use examples from around the world to illustrate your points. For example, Japan uses a particular design for library bookshelves that can withstand earthquakes, ICLR has literature on structural measures practiced in Canada (https://www.iclr.org/earthquake-2/), and this NYT article illustrates the power of building design https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/03/us/earthquake-preparedness-usa-japan.html ;
