For example, if we choose the exosystem concept from Bronfenbrenners Bioecological Theory, we realize that external relationships influence a child indirectly. Within this system, a childs indirect contact can include culture, community, and society. Perhaps you know of a child and family who were displaced due to a natural disaster occurring in their community. The child was not actively involved in the natural disaster but nonetheless is heavily impacted by the result of the disaster. This event may impact the childs basic needs. Additionally, the parent could face economic struggles, emotional stress, and trauma after the tragedy. Thus, the child feels the negative connections of the environmental event. You noticed that the child has changed academically and behaviorally. You assume that this is just a phase, but you still implement punitive measures. If we understood the childs exosystem at the time, we may have been able to provide support rather than punishment.
