Description:

Many of the aseptic techniques used during sterile compounding practices of CSPs such as SVPs and LVPs are also used for specialty preparations.  Narcotic, pediatric, TPN and chemotherapy preparations require additional procedures or techniques during their preparation.

Objectives:

Follow safety policies and procedures in the preparation of all medications. (ASHP Objective 20.4)
Instructions:

Step 1: Respond to the following:

Identify and describe some of the aseptic technique differences between general and specialty preparations.  Are the consequences for not following proper aseptic technique or for having contamination in specialty preparations more severe than for general preparations?  Why or why not?

Step 2: Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two other students. Once again, use any personal experience if appropriate to help support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, students should debate the issues and provide examples to support opinions.

(1.) Identify and describe some of the aseptic technique differences between general and specialty preparations.  Are you preparing a 1-Liter Total Parenteral Nutritional Admixture or a 100 ml bag of Ancef?  Are the sterile techniques and risk levels different between the two types of preparation?

(2.) Are the consequences for not following proper aseptic techniques or having contamination in specialty more severe than for general preparation?  Why or why not?
