Introduction to the Activity

An organizational culture is made up of the shared values, beliefs, rules, norms, and symbols (heroes and villains) found within the organization. Culture develops over time and spreads to new individuals that enter the organization. Leaders influence the development, change, and sustainability of culture through their interaction with the shared values, beliefs, rules, norms, and symbols.

Consider the Following:

Lewin conceptualized change as a three-step process. The last step in this process is the refreezing the new state of being within the organization.

To make the change stick we must consider the way in which the change needs to be embedded into the cultural dimensions of the organization.

Choose a change initiative within your organization and evaluate the effectiveness using the following:

  • Discuss the culture of the current organization using the material in Northouse.
  • Using the material in chapters 2627 in Hayes, discuss the methods needed to change the culture to sustain the change.
  • What is the leaders role in this cultural shift?
  • How successful was the leader in this change initiative?
