Social Stratification in the Media (Assignment 1)

Find TWO television advertisements each promoting the same item (e.g., cars, household cleaning products, electronics, etc.) from within the last 5 years. Closely analyze the details in these sales pitches and take some notes. Be sure to focus on what characteristics and priorities the characters in the ads are presumed to have based on the ads rationale or particular angle. [5 points on the assignment will be based on whether you follow directions and find appropriate television advertisements.]

– For BOTH of the television ads, type one paragraph per question. For a total of six short paragraphs.

1. What product is the television advertisement selling? Do you think this item is important to own/possess?  Explain why or why not? (5 points for each article = 10 total)

2. What class statuses do you think are on display? What aspirations or identities do you think are being appealed to? (7.5 points for each article = 15 total)

3. To what extent is the viewer being asked to identify with a given social and/or economic status? What does ownership of these particular items presumably signify about these potential customers? (10 points for each article = 20 total)

– Please include a link to the product or actual advertisement that you are focusing on in your assignment. You should come to class having watched both television ads and be prepared to discuss them.
