“If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.”
This was a call to action by Paine encouraging parents to get up and fight now so that their children would not have to fight later into their lives. It also was a hit to the character of the tories who were represented by a man stating “Well! give me peace in my day.” Paine thought this to be unfatherly and a good representation of the character of the tories.
This quote stood out to me because I am a parent and, as any decent parent would feel, I would surely want to endure pain and suffering a thousand times over before my child has to endure it once. As parents, we would much rather handle all of the negative in life ourselves so that our children don’t have to endure it.
