The formal role of the nurses in their leadership positions is to make decisions on the practices to be implemented and performing the tasks aimed at improving patients health and wellbeing (St. Catherine University, 2021). The formal roles of the nurses may also include innovating solutions, developing care plans for patients, and influencing policy changes. The essential responsibility of the nurse leaders is to inspire and guide other nurses to excel in their practices. For instance, nurses in leadership positions guide other nurses to improve the quality of care so that patients can benefit from the improved services (St. Catherine University, 2021). Education preparation is required for every nurse in a leadership position. Nurses engage in undergraduate studies, training, and nursing professional development programs that prepare the nurses to assume leadership roles in clinical care settings, hospital departments, and organizations (St. Catherine University, 2021).
Some of the leadership traits required for the nurses’ success in leadership positions include caring, empathy, commitment, attention to details, effective communication and problem-solving skills, and willingness to learn (Regis College, 2021). The traits enable the leaders to inspire and guide others to excel in their practices. The nurses’ leadership styles to fulfill their leadership roles include democratic, transformation, servant, autocratic, and laissez-faire (SNHU, 2021). Nurses in leadership positions are also required to have certain qualities to fulfill their roles and responsibilities effectively. The qualities include critical thinking, respect, mentorship, integrity, effective communication, and socialization skills (Regis College, 2021). The qualities enable the nurse leaders to establish better relationships with other people in the nursing work environments and other settings.
