Outline:

Women across the border have been a victim to sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women have reported an incident involving a form of sexual harassment and/or assault, 1 in 5 women have experienced rape during their lifetime.

What is Sexual Violence?

Sexual Violence is a broad term used to refer to crimes like sexual assault, rape, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, etc. Sexual Violence can vary state to state but the definition stays the same.

What is categorized under sexual violence?

–          Sexual Assault

–          Sexual Abuse

–          Sexual harassment

–          Rape

–          Child Sexual Abuse

In 2006, Tarana Burke started a movement called “Me Too” which was a social movement against sexual abuse and sexual harassment where people all over the world can publicize their experiences. By the year 2017, this movement gained widespread attention and gave more women and men the chance to tell their story.

Less than 1% of sexual assaults lead to a conviction according to Dallas News. Sexual Violence is the easiest crime to commit being that women do not always report their crime. The biggest question when presenting that statement is why women don’t report their assault. Women get shamed. Women get blamed for what happened to them. Women get harassed on a day-to-day basis and absolutely nothing happens to those doing the harassing.

What is currently being done?

(I’m still doing research to find out what is being done)

For victims of this crime, there are hotlines and resources that have been put together for these women. On the internet, you can find many different sources that can and should help victims to this disgusting crime.

The following laws have been put in place in protection victims to this crime:

–          USC, Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 109A – Sexual Abuse

–          Section 2241, Aggravated Sexual Abuse

–          Section 2242. Sexual Abuse

–          Section 2243. Sexual Abuse of a Minor or Ward

–          Section 2244. Abusive Sexual Conduct

Future Solutions and what more can be done?

This is where the truth comes in, this is where these victims should be getting heard, right? Wrong. These laws do nothing but keep these victims in a loop, keep these victims to relive the trauma they endeared. The whole trial in itself is heartbreaking and the process is draining. Putting the victim in the same court room as the convict is preposterous. I think the victim should get a choice as to whether or not they want to be in the same room as their abused. Women who are abused (most likely by someone they know) will not speak up in court in the same room as the abuser. Women who are going through something like this, cannot stand to even look at the convict which is why my solution is to keep them separate. I believe the victim should be able to tell their story with no judgement. I believe there should be more resources for women in situations like this. More cases go left unreported day after day and it’s because of these situations that they are put in. There should be a quicker way to convict these people, make it easier for these women to make a report.
