Analysis Paper: Outline

you will submit an Analysis Paper. You will use a logical analysis of your choice. The argument you select can come from any source (a movie, book, religious teaching, politician’s soundbite, song, poem, supreme court judgment, etc.) and can be analyzed using any of the methods practiced during this course (fallacies, famous forms, natural deduction, quantifiers, probability, and induction). This week you will submit an outline of your paper. In your outline, explain how you will do each of these steps in your analysis paper:

  1. Introduction and initial statement of the argument
  2. Symbolizing the argument
  3. Analysis of the form of the argument (valid or invalid)
  4. Analysis of the premises of the argument (true or false)
  5. Suggestions to improve the original argument to make it more compelling

Purpose: This assignment allows you to take the skills developed through the course and apply them in a more naturalistic mode. Since humans do not communicate through highly rigorous symbolic notation but rather through prose, this assignment brings logic closer to regular life. This exercise gives you a jump start on your paper.

Parameters: There is no set format for this assignment, such as Roman numerals, but it must be submitted as a Word document and include a paragraph for each section listed in the prompt.
