PEERS POST:
I will be discussing Jose for this discussion. Jose has been hitting his peers and not following the classroom rules. As an educator, my job is to make sure I’m providing an environment where my students feel safe and comfortable while learning. I will talk to Jose’s parents to get more information about their culture and get more information on what they would consider a challenging behavior. I will discuss the challenging behaviors that I am having with Jose and ask for suggestions on how I can handle the challenging behaviors in the classroom. I will explain to Jose’s parents that we have classroom rules to keep everyone safe and Jose must learn how to follow those rules and respect his classmates. I will let Jose’s parents that we can come up with a solution on how Jose can express how he feels with words instead of hitting. “Regardless of their culture, race, or ethnicity, children need to feel safe, respected, and cared for to be able to learn” (Kaiser & Sklar Rasminsky, 2017, sec 1.3).
To help support Jose in the classroom when he is having these challenging behaviors is to teach simple anger management skills. One technique to help with anger management skills is “blowing bubbles with your child as a way to teach them to take a deep, calming breath and teach them to use bubble breaths when they feel mad” (Cinelli, 2022). I will share this with Jose’s parents, and they can also use this technique at home with Jose is mad.
To help Jose feel like he is a part of our classroom is to have books, songs, craft supplies, and toys that represent his culture and other students’ culture incorporated into daily play and curriculum activities.
