“Accenting Language” Blog entry (400 + words) –
identify 10+ words from your own speech that I pronounce in a way that is different from Standard English pronunciation. You should write these words in their standard spelling, then provide a spelling that suggests how you actually say them. Possible questions to reflect upon: Do you speak a prestige dialect, or a stigmatized dialect? Both? Does that depend on the context in which you speak? When you travel, do people identify where you’re from based on your accent/dialect? Do people ever make assumptions about you because of how you speak? How might your pre-conceived ideas about your students’ language, or perhaps theirs about yours, play out in your classroom?
