- Think about the Japanese art forms. Consider and write, in a minimum of 500 words, how Zen Buddhism shaped them.
- Has Zen Buddism or similar philosophies had any influence on your own belief system?
o If so, how?
• HELPFUL HINTS: Traditional Japanese art forms are quite different from our western hemisphere arts. To begin with the tea ceremony is
considered art, as is flower arranging (Ikebana). What else is a Japanese art form? How about the poetry Haiku, or calligraphy, Shodo. The Noh Theatre is also Japanese art.
Landscape gardening is a unique form of art in Japan as well. Only in Japan would we see gardens made of rocks like the Karesansui gardens. Ukiyo-e is a type of wood block print that is also not like the prints made in Europe or America. There are other Japanese art forms that you could research and write about. And don’t forget to link the art with the practice of Zen Buddhism. That means you will need to research a little deeper into the precepts (or teachings) of Zen Buddhism to unlock the connection.
