Prompt

In PBS’ (2014) video, Separate and Unequal, and in the podcast Nice White Parents (2020) the authors highlight an ongoing issue in the U.S. regarding the “new segregation” battle.

Separate and Unequal

As a society, how do we:

  1. ensure schools are desegregated AND high quality for all students?
  2. address parents’ beliefs and attitudes about schooling, the needs of their children, and the needs of other children?
  3. address communities that want to break off and create new schools or programs to meet the needs of select students?

A strong answer will propose solutions/strategies for the above questions regarding desegregation, creating high-quality schools in all areas, and working with parents to ease tensions/concerns over their children’s education. Tasks

In this assignment you will do the following:

  • Write at least 1 paragraph (6-8 sentences) for each question.
  • Each paragraph must have a thesis/introductory sentence, body sentences that articulate your ideas and provide examples, and a concluding sentence that wraps up your thoughts.
  • You must include 1 in-text citation in APA format (it can be from the Separate and Unequal film, other material assigned this week, or outside sources). You are only required to have one citation total (not 1 citation per paragraph)
  • Your writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors and written in academic language (not informal, conversational language).

Time Frame

The film is 27 minutes in length. Writing your response to the film may take you 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete, depending on how long it takes for you to organize your 3 paragraph responses.
