Using only half a proverb will get you a failing grade.

- “A single bracelet does not jingle”( Congo)
- When reading this quote I think about help and how and when to ask for it. Many individuals pride themselves in doing things themselves and being independent; however, there is always room for improvement. I also think about how silent a single bracelet is. It makes no noise because it has no other companions. It looks naked on a wrist because the one bracelet does not shine alone. That jingle is the help that is needed.
- In Tayler J. Matthews and Glenn S. Johnsons “Skin Complexion in the Twenty-First Century: The Impact of Colorism on African American Women”, they mention how “A significant proportion of African-American men consciously and subconsciously practice bias in relation to skin complexion. This form of intraracial discrimination creates relationship conflicts between men and women, and further negates a woman’s self-esteem through rejection and humiliation. Indeed young African-American girls are conscious “that most Black men prefer their women to be ‘light, bright, and sometimes White”(Russell, Wilson, & Hall 1993:107). (pg.253). This idea of not feeling like enough truly impacts black women. If growing up they are told that light skin is cuter and that specific body parts need to be thin, then they will grow up disliking themselves if their bodies do not resemble that. Especially if it is coming from black men . In other words, they are the single bracelet with no jingle. Black women are often left alone and needing to pick up a lot of responsibility at a young age. When thinking about this, black women represent the single bracelet that needs companions to make it jingle. A bracelet that jingles is accompanied and not alone.
The emphasis in these assignments is on critical thinking more than anything else.
For completing compare and contrast assignments (#2) please make sure each similarity or difference is clearly distinct and the subject is not something arguably trivial. We are attempting to engage ideas, while understanding how they become institutionalized and embodied in many different ways. Make sure that the idea or theme that you center as your similarity/difference is in boldface. In addition, a quote from the texts/video must be used to validate your similarities and/or differences.
