Read “Serena William’s Tennis Outfits Defy the Norms Female Athletes Face” (p. 263) and “Google Home vs. Alexa: Two Simple User Experience Design Gestures That Delighted a Female User” (p. 278) in Everyone’s an Author, which can be accessed by clicking on Bookshelf [RedShelf] on the left-hand toolbar.

After reading both selections, write at least 250 words to answer ONE of the prompts below, and include the prompt number in your answer. If you quote directly from the passage, remember to include quotation marks around the quoted material; direct quotes should be kept to a minimum to receive full credit for the assignment.

Prompt 1: For this reader response, write about your personal reaction to Frankie De La Cretaz’s “Serena William’s Tennis Outfits Defy the Norms Female Athletes Face.” Did you find the essay assuming, annoying, or somewhere in between? Cite specific examples from the text to support your response.

Prompt 2: Considering the audience is very important when writing an essay. What is the intended audience of Johna Paolino’s “Google Home vs. Alexa: Two Simple User Experience Design Gestures That Delighted a Female User”? Would the essay be different if it were targeting a different audience? Explain and cite specific examples from the text to support your thoughts.

  • For this essay, you will focus on the similarities (compare) or the differences (contrast) of two related things: men and women, for example.
  • The first step in your process is to select a topic.
  • Then think about your purpose.
  • Your thesis statement will be constructed as follows: thesis = topic + purpose
    • EXAMPLE:
      • Topic: SUVs and trucks
      • Purpose: to help the reader decide which to purchase
      • Thesis: Although SUVs and trucks are similar, a consumer should consider the differences between them, including storage space, towing capability, and passenger capacity.
  • Submit the Comparison/Contrast Thesis Statement by 11:59 pm on Sunday.
  • For comparison/contrast essay details, review pages 458-460 in Everyone’s an Author.
