Paper one is a thesis-centered essay in which you will evaluate the expressed or implied arguments of two articles, including any articles from the “Articles about Books” , Timothy Snyder, Moms for Liberty, or Linker. Do NOT use more than two articles or any outside articles.
YOUR argument for this paper will NOT primarily be about your opinion on the banning of books; rather, it will (primarily) be about how effectively or ineffectively the authors you choose to write about make their cases. Quoting selectively, efficiently, and effectively, identify their positions, analyze their evidence and logic, and provide your sense of the strengths and weaknesses of the articles. You should have a clear, concise, arguable position stated in your thesis, and the body of the paper should present your argument in thoughtful, well-supported, well-organized paragraphs.
ou may pursue any argument you like, as long as it meets the criteria listed above. If you’d like some options, here are a few:
* How do the 2 articles’ definitions (expressed or implied) of “critical thinking” or “freedom” differ? With which are you more in agreement?
* How do these 2 articles see the role of education in broader society differently? Which position do you think is better?
- According to the 2 articles, what is the purpose of democracy / history / reading / (or some other relevant, abstract concept) in society today? Do you agree with one author’s position over the other?
Please make sure your computer is not adding extra spaces between paragraphs. This is sometimes the default setting, so please turn it off! Here’s how:
On the toolbar under the “Home” tab, click the spacing icon:
Select “Line spacing options” from the drop-down menu. Then check the box that says “Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style”
