There were two faculty members that interested me personally and professionally.  The first was Lori Lacivita PhD.  This week’s learning resource made me aware of Industrial Org Psychology.   When I began my career, our company purchased a company with a high turnover and lost revenue.  Our Human Resource department were overwhelmed, and the company hired an outside consultant.  The consultants went through current policies and helped change the behaviors that were affecting productivity from poor supervision.  The company terminated all supervisors within the acquisition and required mandatory in-house training called great supervision. The change in company policy and management/employees’ relations impacted a lot of lives. The second faculty member was Eric Hickey, PhD.   I was fascinated with Criminal Investigations, but it did not get personal until I began volunteering in the court system as a GAL. The Guardian ad Litem program are advocates for abused and neglected children.  We work with foster care, DSS, legal, guardians, and the parents.  I did not realize the amount of work required for reunification.  Working with parents who are often the abuser can be challenging.  I often see addiction and increased mental illness.  I am grateful for the continued education that helps us cope with the process.

I have enjoyed working in healthcare but volunteering with the court system changes your views on a lot of issues.  Criminal Psychology interests me because I want to understand the behavior so we can help solve the problem.    There is a huge waiting list for mental health in our area.  I hope this program gives me the skills to help more people in our area.
