Week 5 – Assignment: Evaluate Testing Principles in Athletics

Previous  Next
Instructions
For this task, you have closely observed an athlete during competition. Now imagine yourself in this following situation:

You are the strength and conditioning coach for the athlete of your choice. You have been asked to create four testing principles that you would use on this athlete. The main goal is to choose the right testing protocol for this athlete so that you as the coach can then assess the athlete and be able to plan the appropriate strength and conditioning program. Each program a coach gives to their athlete must be detailed in nature and there must be a concrete rationale for the exercise selection. In order to choose the appropriate exercises the coach must assess their athlete by observing and administering the appropriate tests. You may choose any testing protocol components that you see fit for the athlete of your choice.
Please note that you are not limited to the testing principles from NSCA that you reviewed in the Assignment Preparation. However, the tests that you choose must be from a credible resource or company. This is a great time to research other testing protocols from peer reviewed journals that relate to the athlete/sport of your choice. A few suggestions are provided here but this is only a beginning not a definitive list:

Assessment/Testing Options:

Aerobic Capacity Testing
Anaerobic Capacity Testing
Anthropometry and Body Composition
Exercise Testing for Athletes
Techniques of Exercise 1
Techniques of Exercise 2
Speed, Agility Techniques and Testing
Muscular Strength and Power Testing
Muscular Endurance Testing
Techniques of Exercise
Facility Layout Design

Once you have identified your athlete and assembled a testing protocol to fit the needs of that athlete, you will write a reflection paper to demonstrate your full understanding of composing the appropriate testing protocol/principles. You must provide a detailed rationale as you interpret your data. Please provide these components in your testing principles paper:

Which sport the athlete plays
Who your athlete is (use a pseudonym as you provide a profile, if necessary) and their current performance level
Age group of the athlete
An interpretation of your selected tests with supporting research from existing professional studies
Why the assessment would be affective in creating the optimal athlete for your sport of choice
Provide a detailed rationale explaining what you are trying to accomplish as a coach and what you would want to be seeing during the testing procedures
Length: 4-7 pages
References: A minimum of 3 scholarly references is required

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards
