WHAT TO DO:

Please review the instructions one more time, just in case.  Then upload your work in word or pdf format.  THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE THEIR PAPER UPLOADS PROPERLY AND CAN BE OPENED BY THE GRADER.

*

PAPER FORMAT –  I am more interested in the content, but here is a suggested format:

– Single Spaced

– 11-point Arial font

– Use bold and underlined topic and sub-topic headings to organize your paper

– one inch borders (top, bottom, left, right)

*

In your submission, please first list:

1, YOUR NAME

*

2. TITLE OF YOUR PAPER

*

3. THEN FOLLOW THIS TEMPLATE BELOW AND INCLUDE THE BOLD, SUB-TOPIC HEADINGS-INTRODUCTION, LITERATURE REVIEW, CONNECTIONS WITH COURSE SOURCES (CONCEPTS, THEORIES & CASES), PROPOSED SAMPLE & METHODS, CONCLUSIONS & BIBLIOGRAPHY.

DO NOT TURN IN SOMETHING WITHOUT THESE TOPIC HEADINGS. YOU WILL LOSE POINTS FOR THIS.

Hint: cut and paste this template below onto a word file and work from that.  THOUGH DO NOT INCLUDE MY DESCRIPTIONS OF THESE SECTIONS IN YOUR FINAL DRAFT.  IF YOU DO, YOU WILL LOSE POINTS.

                                  TEMPLATE

Introduction (half to one page)  While properly in-text citing with author/director, year and page/timecode, offer knowledge from your two annotated articles (REQUIRED) and the course sources (OPTIONAL) that support why this is an important topic.  Then, explain to the reader what you will do in this paper to address this topic/controversy by reviewing the literature, then connecting this literature to the connections listed below and proposing new research on the topic.  (CITE with author and year)  1 pts

*

Here is an in-text citing guide to help you out throughout the paper:

*

Literature Review (1.5 to 2 pages) Synthesize your two annotated bibliographic articles.  While properly in-text citing with author, year and page number, synthesize your TWO articles into one overview of this topic and how the past research your annotated has theoretically approached this topic, researched it and what it found and/or concluded.  DO NOT JUST CUT AND PASTE YOUR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OR PRESENT A SUMMARY OF ONE ARTICLE AFTER THE OTHER.  That will NOT earn you any points on this section.  Instead challenge yourself to compare and contrast what your articles say in terms of the literature they reviewed, the theories used to frame the topic, the sample & methods used and most importantly, the findings & conclusions made. (CITE with author and year) 3 pts

*

Course Connections (3 to 5 pages) White citing properly with author/director, year, and page/timecode number of ONLY THE COURSE SOURCES, connect your synthesis above to the following REQUIRED & other MOST RELEVANT course elements:

Concepts   Connect your synthesis to TWO  course concepts

Define each of the two CONCEPTS  based on the lecture and/or the Textbook ONLY, WHILE citing properly.  Then explain in what context these TWO concepts were used in the textbook or lectures.  Then connect your annotated synthesis SEPARATELY with each of the TWO concepts [HINT: the titles of the chapters are concepts, the titles of the sub-sections within chapters are concepts, the descriptions or categories of phenomenon within sub-sections are concepts. You might identify key concepts in your annotated articles that overlap with the key course concepts you have chosen]  (CITE with author and year)– 3 pts

Theories  Define TWO THEORIES that are MOST RELEVANT to your CONTROVERSY/TOPIC based on the lecture and/or the Textbook ONLY, WHILE citing the course sources properly.  Then explain how these TWO theories were used to explain social phenomenon in the Textbook and/or Lectures.  Then connect your annotated synthesis SEPARATELY with each of the two theories you choose [HINT: A theory is a systematic explanation for complex phenomenon that connects concepts in some cause and effect manner. You might identify key theories in your annotated articles that overlap with the course theories you have chosen] (CITE with author and year) 3 pts

Cases:  CONNECT your synthesis to the REQUIRED & the other MOST RELEVANT video and text cases BELOW.  Choose carefully and make the argument well.  First, summarize briefly the case, while properly in-text citing with author/director, year, and page/timecode.  Then, separately connect these video and text cases with key knowledge from the synthesis of your annotated articles above.   In other words, how do these cases reflect what you learned from your annotated synthesis BE SPECIFIC.

KEEP THESE CASE CONNECTIONS SEPARATE USING UNDER-LINED SUB-TOPIC HEADINGS

   – My Ishmael (CITE with author and year) 2 pts (HINT: chose a Character or Event or a Theme that runs throughout the narrative)

   –  REQUIRED “Left Behind” (2 pts) and One other film relevant to your topic from the following List:  “LA92”, “Stalking Amanda Todd”, “Family Matters”, ‘The Corporation”, “Sick Around the World”, “End of Suburbia”, “Why We Fight” – 2 pts

–   Two Assigned Articles [“Code of the Streets” & “Sexual Assault on College Campus”] (CITE with author and year) 4 pts

 *

Proposed Research Sample & Method (1 to 2 pages)  – Imagine Conducting your own research on this topic.  What would be your research question or hypothesis? Then explain how you would conduct this research by  (a) explaining ONE Sampling Design [population you approach, the sampling technique you use, and your sample size you will shoot for] AND ONE Research Method you will use [technique for gathering data from the sample], which you have learned from the ENTIRE course, while properly in-text citing the lectures or assigned readings.  DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE BUT COURSE SOURCES. Be specific in terms of, for example, some of the survey questions or conversation starters you might ask your sample individual or in focus group or the things you measure about it from existing data perhaps.  And explain how you administer this research technique e.g., (face to face, phone or by mail/internet) in order to address your research question or test your hypothesis.  Then while again properly in-text citing, explain how your Sampling Technique and Research Method are similar or different from those used by the articles you annotated. Finally, in conducting this research, how will you (a) reduce the observer effect & researcher bias, as well as (b) conduct this research ethically? (CITE with author and year)– 3 points [Hint: review the video lectures in Modules Wee 2, 3 and 4]

Conclusion (half a page) Again, while properly in-text citing the author/director, year and page/timecode, summarize what you did in this research proposal,  and discuss how these course concepts, theories, methods and cases AND your annotated articles helped you better understand your topic of interest.  BE SPECIFIC 1 pts
