1. How did religious beliefs motivate the Puritans and the Quakers? Do you think that their beliefs are echoed even to this day in US politics?
2. Imagine that you are an American colonist who is considering whether to support the revolution in 1776. You have read Adams’ “Thoughts on Government,” the 2 Paine readings assigned, and “The Declaration of Independence.” Do you find any of the arguments in the readings persuasive? If so, which reading do you find most persuasive? If not, why do you not support the revolution.
3. Explain this statement: The Constitutional Founders created a government that accommodates different interests while maintaining the possibility of Republican virtue?
Do you think that they succeeded? That is, (1) does the government accommodate different interests and (2) is Republican virtue still possible in the USA?
