Any topic (writer’s choice)

Using the tools of religious studies, students are expected to describe the nature of the phenomena (as discussed in Hunt for the Skinwalker), and provide a cogent, clearly articulated hypothesis and thesis of the phenomena. The essay is to provide a compelling explanation of the phenomena, answering who, what, where, why, when, and how (i.e. what the hell is going on). Students are expected to cite directly from the text, and cross-reference/analyze material from Skinwalker with other readings from class (notably, from Jeffrey Kripal and William James, and others), citing these sources with proper endnotes. Essays are to be between 750 1000 words (roughly 4 pages, Times New Roman, double-spaced + Works Cited page). Essays are due by 11:59pm on Friday, March 12 to Course Site. Essays will not be graded on whether students believe or not in the phenomena (nor, in what), but on clarity of thought, organizational structure of the essay, and compelling, well-reasoned, logically and/or empirically-grounded argumentation (20% of the final grade).
