You will write an essay of between 1200 and 1500 words (roughly 4-5 pages of double spaced Times New Roman). You will write this essay mostly using slides from class. Can add few additional source if needed.
Discuss the relationship between Japaneseness and the foreign in Japanese literature and culture from the 17th to the early 20th century. What foreign influences can we trace? How has the foreign been depicted? What other countries, cultures, and/or literatures have been important in Japan, how, and why? Answer using specific examples from works read in this class.
