Formal Analysis
The form/structure/organization of an artwork contributes to our understanding of it’s overall meaning.
First, watch this 10 minute video on formal analysis. As you watch, consider how the artist conveys meaning through compositional choices. Without knowing anything about the artist, time period in which it was made, or specific religious/cultural symbolism, we can come to some basic conclusions as to what this work is about.
Second, explore Art UK. Pick an artwork that you find particularly interesting. Analyze the work. Consider how its design influences your understanding of meaning.
Third, briefly describe the artwork’s design, and write a thesis statement. Remember your thesis needs to pass the “how” and “why” test. How was it constructed (e.g. the organization of elements through the principles of design), and why was it made (e.g. content, meaning, purpose, message)? Don’t overreach, with your interpretation of meaning. The artwork’s form should
support your interpretation. Be sure to include an image of your artwork or provide a link.
