Part1: Compare and contrast Manet’s Realist Le Dejuner sur l’herbe and Bouguereau’s Academic Nymphs and Satyr.
What stylistic characteristics make Manet’s painting an example of Realism? Why do you think Manet’s painting was considered “immoral” and “amateurish” while the critics praised Bouguereau’s painting? Who are the nude women in each painting?
What are the differences between the nude female bodies in each painting? Pay particular attention to how they are posed and how the paint is applied to the canvas. What are the women looking at? How do the women in each painting relate to the viewer differently?
Part2: How did the advent of photography and/or the introduction of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints influence the impressionists in their abandoning of the stylistic characteristics of traditional painting? Write based on artwork Women’s Bath by Torii Kiyonaga (1780s)

Discuss and consider how he, she, or they employs the artwork to address this. Write based on artwork Kara Walker, Camptown Ladies, 1998, cut paper and adhesive on wall, 9 x 67 feet.
Part4: How is text different than images when dealing with constructions of identity? How is text both helpful and problematic in discussing constructions of identity? Provide an example from your own experiences.
