Background: As part of their professional practice, Social Workers are often called upon to evaluate and create interventions based on best practices.  In generalist social work with groups, this may include finding supportive information for the creation of a group designed to help a specific population.  In this assignment, we will demonstrate the ability to digest, evaluate, and utilize this literature in the formation of best practices with groups.

Purpose:  The purpose of this assignment to help students demonstrate essential skills associated the following learning objectives:

  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive framework for planning treatment and task groups.
  2. Apply best practices to group assessment and treatment planning.
  3. Understand the empirical evidence for specialized group methods.
  4. Apply professionalism and ethics to the formation of group interventions.

Description:

Students will demonstrate skills in the discernment of peer reviewed articles associated with group work with a specific population.  As part of the process of researching evidenced based practices, each student will read two professional scholarly journal articles related to the focus of their term paper discussed below and complete a summative annotated bibliography of each article. The bibliography should include an abstract of the article, the reader’s professional reaction to it, and why it is relevant to their term paper topic. These articles should also include enough insight to complete the Leadership Assignment described above.

Format – You will submit both annotated bibliographies in one document using the assignment link in Canvas. The annotations should be 2-3 paragraphs for each article and include the following:

  • The article citation (APA style, see Canvas, Web Resources, Purdue-OWL sample).  You will create the annotation as explained in the Purdue-OWL for APA.
  • A one-paragraph abstract of the article (in your own words)
  • Your reaction to the article regarding the relevance to social work practice and why this is relevant to the topic chosen for your term paper.
  • Annotations must be typed, double-spaced and submitted on time.

Process – Each student shall:

  • Find two peer-reviewed articles relevant to your topic area.
  • Write an annotated bibliography following the description and formatting above.
  • Your paper needs to be submitted through Blackboard by the due date listed in the course schedule. Late papers will not be accepted.
