Platos Four Themes
1. Art techne principle is measurement
2. Imitative Art- aim is deficiencies- divine maker- artists imitate the unchanged world, ideas of justice, the good, courage,
temperance, and the beautiful
Must be true (fit) imitation and not false (unfit)
3. Enthusiasm, madness, mania- necessary condition for poetic
creativity
Artist are filled with the divine inspiration
Mad in a noble way possessed
No man, even if they command techne, can achieve success
without divine assistance
Four types of madness: prophetic, initiatory, poetic, and erotic
4. Erotic madness- connection with vision of Beauty
Beauty achieved through longing for a lover, needs of the soul
Erotic madness relates to divinity and the form of Beauty
Without madness the artist/philosopher could never produce
