In the essay, you must have an identifiable thesis statement as the last sentence of your introduction which clearly identifies the topic, makes a definite claim about that topic, and provides the reader with at least a general sense of evidence that will be used to support that claim. The essay will not only provide sufficient reasons for the claim, but will also identify and refute at least one argument an opponent of that claim might raise against it.
