Look around your house for an ionic compound.

Around my house, I found NaHCO3 as my ionic compound.

  • Look around your work (or the internet) for an ionic compound in the medical field.

An ionic compound found in the medical field is NaOH.

  • Discuss each ionic compound, including the name and formula, and how it is used at home and in the medical field.

NaHCO3 is baking soda is used for baking or cleaning around the house.

NaOH is sodium hydroxide and is used to make different medicines.

  • Finally, list one additional ionic compound. Don’t name the compound, just list its molecular formula.

KBr

    • Around my house, I found KOH as my ionic compound.
  • Look around your work (or the internet) for an ionic compound in the medical field.

    • I found MgSO4 as my ionic compound.
  • Discuss each ionic compound, including the name and formula, and how it is used at home and in the medical field.

    • KOH is known as potassium hydroxide.  It is used for cleaning. You can clean drains, ovens, etc. It is found in soaps and detergents.
    • MgSO4 is known as magnesium sulfate.  In the medical field, it is an IV solution or used as a medication for certain conditions.
  • Make sure to discuss how the cation and anion were formed.

    • K is in group 1 so it forms K+ when it loses an electron.
    • O is in group 16.
    • H is in group 1.
    • Mg is group 2 so it forms Mg2+ when it loses electrons.
    • S is in group 16.
  • Finally, list one additional ionic compound. Don’t name the compound, just list its molecular formula.

    • AgNO3
