This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.
One of the responsibilities in public health is to determine the level of health literacy of the person or group with whom you are working. This is important because when people can access and understand health information, they are able to take a more active role in their health.
For this assignment, you will create an informative pamphlet for a population and design it according to the population’s level of health literacy.
Part I
The instructor will assign each CLC group a health issue. Use the resources in the topic materials to research the health issue. Choose a specific population at risk for or affected by the issue. Identify the social determinants of health that contribute to the health issue for this population. Evaluate the health literacy level of the population and discuss what needs to be considered in the verbiage and design of the document.
Part II
Create a pamphlet relevant to the health issue and the population you choose. The pamphlet should include:
- Purpose: Information for your target population that describes what the health issue is and how it directly affects the population.
- Call to Action: Solutions or support offered (e.g., 911 call, lists of clinics and contact information).
- Health Literacy: Pamphlet verbiage and design are tailored to the level of comprehension and decision making of the target audience (i.e. the audience must be able to understand the health information and make appropriate health decisions based on the information given).
Part III
In a 150-250 word summary, provide rationale that supports the information and design in the pamphlet or flyer. Include a brief description of the target audience and literacy level. Explain why this group is prone to this health issue. Explain how you would disseminate this pamphlet, and what you would say when giving this pamphlet to people.
