There is debate about whether grammar should be explicitly taught. Some argue that grammar can be acquired through implicit instruction. Implicit instruction involves providing students with reading and writing activities so that they can subconsciously acquire grammatical forms. Regardless of who is right, reading and writing exercises can be used to develop grammar.
Allocate at least 5 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Observe at least one Grade K-8 classroom with ELLs. Focus your observations on the strategies utilized to develop reading, writing, and grammar. Discuss with your mentor teacher how to differentiate reading, writing, and grammar instruction and assessment.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Write a 250-500 word reflection regarding your observations and discussion. Your reflection should include:
- 1. An example of the effective use of an instructional strategy within each of the following domains: Reading, Writing, and Grammar.
- 2. How these strategies could be differentiated to meet the learning needs of ELLs at various levels of English language proficiency.
