Response Requirements:

1) Research and write about food deserts in the United States. Which communities are most impacted by food deserts? What areas in the United States are most impacted by food deserts? What are proposed or possible solutions to the damage caused by food deserts? Summarize your findings in a 100 words or less. Cite your sources.

2) A supermarket (red dot on photo below) at the intersection of two freeways does not oer equal access to fresh food to all neighborhoods in a city. Residents of a more affluent and predominately white neighborhood (green dot) have historically had more access to resources than those residents in lower income communities of color (yellow dot & orange dot). Calculate the distance between each neighborhood and the supermarket using the grid (Note: 1 block = 1 square mile). Write a summary of your findings to be submitted to the committee. Be as detailed as possible (include points, formulas, calculations, or any other information that the committee needs to make the best decision for all communities).

3) A committee of residents from each neighborhood was formed to respond to inequitable access to fresh food in the city. In their report, the committee suggested that a new supermarket (blue dot) be constructed. Calculate the distance from each neighborhood to the new supermarket (blue dot). Is the proposed supermarket location equitable? If yes, why? If not, where on the grid would you propose a new supermarket be built? (Note: 1 block = 1 square mile)  Write a summary of your findings to be submitted to the committee. Be as detailed as possible (include points, formulas, calculations, or any other information that the committee needs to make the best decision for all communities).
