Crime Scene Investigation

Start your paper with an introduction.  In the brief introduction, explain the case you have chosen, and give an overview of the main points of your paper.  You can keep this right around 100 words.

Conducting a Preliminary Investigation

In this paragraph, you should discuss a set of guidelines for the preliminary investigation in your chosen case.  You can also provide a general overview but incorporate specific information according to the details of your case.  This paragraph should be at least 300 words.

Data Mining

For this paragraph, you can simply discuss effective data mining strategies that will help in a criminal case.  Again, you can start off with a general overview, but I want you to apply this to your case.  Refer to Chapter 1 (page 27) in your text for more information on data mining.  You can also refer to the links in the Week 4 “Learn” section.  Chapters 6 and 7 discuss obtaining information and identifying suspects.  Feel free to apply this information to what was previously learned through the info in Chapter 1.  How do we find the information we need to develop suspects?  Or leads? Or discover motive?  This paragraph should be at least 200 words.

Major Crimes

In this paragraph, you will discuss the crimes from your chosen case.  Murder?  Rape?  Robbery?  I want a little more than saying “The suspect in this case was charged with murder.”  Why?  This is all I’m looking for in this section.  This paragraph should be around 100 words.

Important Characteristics of an Effective Criminal Investigator

In this paragraph, refer to Chapter 1 (page 13) for more information on the characteristics of an effective investigator.  After discussing general characteristics, mention how those characteristics (at least one of them) was/were applied in this case.  This section should be around 200 words.

Maintaining the Rights of Victims and those Accused

In this paragraph, you simply need to discuss one way in which an investigator can be efficient and effective yet maintain the rights of the victim and suspect.  Think about the legal issues we discussed in Chapter 2 concerning searches.  How do we preserve victim rights and privacy or confidentiality in certain cases?  This section should be right around 100 words.

Conclusion

In the conclusion, write a few sentences summarizing your paper.  What case did you choose?  What are the highlights of the investigation?  How does all of this information play into an effective investigation?  This can be very short.  2-3 sentences, 50-100 words.
