Critical Thinking

First, take the following internet questionnaire: (subject matter: type of mindset)

According to Halpern (1999) “Critical thinking refers to the use of cognitive skills or strategies that increase the probability of a desirable outcome. Critical thinking is purposeful, reasoned, and goal-directed. It is the kind of thinking involved in solving problems, formulating inferences, calculating likelihoods, and making decisions. When we think critically, we are evaluating the outcomes of our thought processes how good a decision is or how well a problem is solved. (p. 69).

Our mindset (Growth vs. fixed) is connected to our ability to persist in academics, career, and other endeavors.

  1. What is your own definition of critical thinking? What situations might you use critical thinking?
  2. What is the role of critical thinking in psychology?
  3. What was your score on the mindset questionnaire? How might this connect to your ideas about critical thinking?
  4. How has your mindset helped or hindered your professional development?
