Death & Dying

Final Written Assignment: Saying Goodbye

If you were lying in your bed knowing that you had only a day or two to live, what would you want to say and to whom would you say it? Complete all three of the following documents and submit them to the Dropbox no later than FRIDAY night.

  1. Farewell Letter

For the purposes of this letter, consider the entity to whom you would want to make a final statement. The recipient might be a spouse, children, and family in general, a friend, a faith leader or congregation, the President of the United States, the United Nations or your insurance agency. To whom would you address the very last communication you will ever make? If you feel strongly about such issues as the clothes you will be buried in, jewelry, which funeral parlor and cemetery, what happens to the ashes, who would speak, readings, whether cosmetics should be used, etc., this is the place to say it. This would be a private document.

  2. Obituary and Funeral Process

Write your own obituary, in no more than one double-spaced page. What do you want people to remember about you? Relate to this as a public document which will appear in the newspapers. Be sure to mention your funeral including details about the viewing, pallbearers, flowers, type of service, music, cemetery or cremation, etc.

  3. The Affairs in Order Checklist
