Driven by both environmental and financial considerations, Recreational Equipment, Inc (REI) considered adding photovoltaic solar panels to the roofs of some of its facilities in 2010. The company had previous experience with solar PV panels that were installed on 11 of its buildings in 2008 which mostly a pilot project. This new phase of the project will, however, need to meet financial objectives as well. The case describes the company’s experience with solar power generation as well as providing representative assumptions for parameters in the financial analysis. An Excel spreadsheet is available for students, incorporating the basic analytical methodology used by REI.
