What I would like everyone to do for this coming Fri, 3/5 is to submit a rough draft of their own descriptive essay – approximately. 1-2 pages minimum, double spaced. I will be primarily focusing on the opening paragraph.
I mentioned a few example openings of papers in the previous announcement. This can be a paper describing almost anything, an event, a holiday, a room or house, such as some of the examples in the text, etc. However, as I mentioned there is no chronological build-up to your event – start right as it is happening. Examples) “As I walked into the woods…” “When I opened the door I saw….” “Coming down the stairs I could smell…” What ever you are going to write about, start as it is just happening, using the five senses, and in as much detail as possible. There is no need in this essay to focus on the thesis. As readers we want to be drawn in to the event by you “showing” rather than “telling” the story.
