Directions:  After reading lectures over the last two weeks, the headnote on Homer and The Iliad, as well as books I, XVIII, XXII, and XXIV, post a response to each of the questions/prompts below for The Iliad.  Unlike previous discussion, you won’t be able to see the responses of others until you post. Do go back and look through the work of others, however. 

Grading:  To receive a 100 on this assignment, you need to post a response to each question/prompt. Editing your responses prior to posting is also helpful (to your grade).  

Prompts:

  1. According to The Norton Anthology of World Literature, what were the Greeks like?
  2. Define/explain/show significance of one of the following terms:  The Golden Apple / Hades (the place) / Olympus. Be sure to link this to The Iliad.
  3. Define explain/show significance of one of the following gods:  Zeus / Thetis / Hera / Athena / Apollo. Be sure to link this to The Iliad.
  4. Define explain/show significance of one of the following terms:  Primary Epic / Oral Literature. Be sure to link this to The Iliad.
  5. Define explain/show significance of one of the following terms:  Invocation / Epic Simile / Greek meter / Central Heroic Figure. Be sure to link this to The Iliad.
  6. Name one other name that Homer uses for the Greeks.
  7. Bonus: Define either Áristos, Aretē, or Aristeía (Hint:  Don’t use Wikipedia for this; use the notes provided in the PowerPoint in lessons 03- 04).
