Discuss how the concept of “health” has changed overtime. Discuss how the concept has evolved to include wellness, illness, and overall well-being.

 Re: Topic 3 DQ 1

Health care is a constantly growing and changing institution. In the past, when medical care was limited and diseases of the new world wreaked havoc on settlers, the primary goal was simply to be absent of disease. Illness was viewed almost as a death sentence back then depending on what disease was caught. Humans did not live as long and children struggled to get past the first years of life if they made it through the tumultuous birthing process. Today’s definition of health and wellness has become much more vast. With the growing capabilities of the medical field, and ongoing research of disease processes, being absent from illness is mostly expected. Health promotion comes in today to further expand the definition of wellness; encouraging healthy lifestyle, diet, and exercise. Todays generations struggle with one or more chronic illnesses. It is important for nurses to promote health across the lifespan to avoid the debilitating side of chronic illnesses.
