The Delegation

“A delegation of minority community leaders arranged to meet with a new principal of a suburban high school of 1800 students. The delegation spokesperson alleged that minority students are punished more severally than White students. The spokesperson alleges that since a majority of teachers and both assistant principals are White they do not understand the needs and culture of minority students. The spokesperson insisted that the new principal make recruitment of minority teachers and assistant principals a priority. After the delegation left, the principal reviewed student demographics and discipline records. The student population consists of 40% African American, 10% Hispanic, and 50% White/Non-Hispanic. After reviewing the past two years suspension and expulsion data the principal found that 70% of the students suspended for 3 or more days are African American or Hispanic. In addition, 88% of the students referred to the school board for expulsion (defined as an out-of-school suspension of 10 days or more) were African American.”
