Several weeks ago, I read an article that discussed how many restaurant organizations today have somewhat lost their identity. For example, Joe’s Steakhouse (a fictitious name) offered steaks of all kinds, but then they also had on the menu Mexican Food, Italian Food, and even hamburgers and hot dogs. The article explained that not only was this costing Joe a great deal of extra money in having additional items on the menu, but he had lost his true identity as a quality steakhouse. The article explained that many organizations today are reassessing their menus and offerings. They are making moves to get back to who they are.

When you think about it, many organizations today try to be “the jacks of all trades, but master of none”. As a result, they lose their identity of who they really are. They are getting away from what they do best and journey into areas where they are not specialists. The bottom line is their products become medium at best.

Based on this article and its findings, do you think organizations are helping or hurting themselves by trying to please everyone and not specializing in what they do best?
